Antique Jasailmer Stone Planter. Formerly A Pounder For Grinding Herbs And Spices

Fine and rare antique Indian stone pounder or mortar with beautiful carving from Jasailmer in northern Rajasthan. This has been entirely carved by hand over a century or more ago by skilled craftsmen in Jasailmer. These pounders were widely used for grinding down herbs and spices, just as we use pestles and mortar today. These are typically found in the desert regions of Rajasthan where temperatures can exceed 50 degrees and metal or wood grinders did not last well. Today these can be repurposed as planters or bird baths. As with all old stone items, cut and carved by hand many many years ago, with a beautiful colour and patina which really shows its age and history, and there are some historic age related marks and wear and tear as you would expect for stone carvings of this age.
