Description
Incredibly beautiful 19th century Indian teak Thakat table from Rajasthan. This is a really large and gorgeous example, with tons of character. Traditional Thakats, like this one, had multiple uses, which included working, eating and sleeping. Also commonly used by merchants as a platform to work from and usually outside, though this one was almost certainly an interior piece of some superior quality and most likely primarily, for dining. Thakats were also commissioned by heads of villages to use to gather around for important village related matters. Thakats are lower in height than western dining tables, though this one is somewhat taller than commonly found examples. It’s a strikingly large piece of furniture and solidly constructed from 19th century teak. It is entirely original. The surface has a wonderful patina, with wear consistent with more than a century of use. It has a few old, nicely crafted, small artisan repairs, attesting to the value to it’s owner. This is an ideal coffee or occasional table for a large room and is a real centrepiece for any home.
